AI Is Changing IT Staffing. Here Is What That Means for Your Next Hire

MerciIT Insights · · 4 min read

Artificial intelligence has moved from experiment to everyday tool. Companies are putting AI into products, customer service, security operations and internal workflows. That shift is changing which people they need, and how they find them.

New roles, and old roles with new skills

Some AI roles are new: machine learning engineers, AI platform engineers, data engineers who build the pipelines that models depend on, and specialists in AI governance and risk. But the bigger change is in existing roles. Software engineers now build with AI assistants and AI APIs. Security teams defend AI systems and use AI to triage alerts. Business analysts work with AI to find patterns faster.

That means many of your next hires will need some AI skill, even if "AI" is not in the job title.

What to look for in AI talent

  • Practical delivery: people who have shipped AI into production, not only built demos.
  • Strong data foundations: AI is only as good as the data behind it, so data engineering and quality skills are in high demand.
  • Security and governance awareness: knowing how to protect data, manage access and reduce risks such as data leaks and misuse.
  • Business sense: the ability to tie an AI project to a clear outcome, such as faster service, lower cost or better decisions.

AI is changing how we hire, too

AI tools can help sort applications and spot patterns, but they cannot judge real depth or fit on their own. Used carelessly, they can also filter out strong candidates or repeat old biases. The best approach combines smart tools with experienced specialists who understand the work and make the final call.

A global pool for a global skill

AI talent is in short supply in every local market. Companies that widen their search, onshore, nearshore and offshore, reach far more skilled people. Africa's IT hubs, for example, are producing a growing number of data and AI professionals who are English-speaking and work hours that overlap with Europe and the US East Coast.

Build, borrow or upskill?

Not every AI need calls for a new full-time hire. Most companies use a mix of three approaches:

  • Build: hire permanent AI and data specialists when AI is central to your product or strategy for years to come.
  • Borrow: bring in contract specialists for a defined project, such as a first production model, a data platform or an AI security review. Contract-to-hire lets you test the fit before committing.
  • Upskill: train your current engineers, analysts and security staff to use AI well. They already know your systems and your business.

A common pattern is to borrow experienced specialists to lead the first projects, while they help upskill the internal team. Permanent hires follow once the company knows which skills it needs long term.

Start with the problem, not the title

Many AI job descriptions ask for everything: research experience, production engineering, data platform skills, cloud expertise and business strategy in one person. That person is very rare, and the search can run for months.

A better brief starts with the problem. Do you need to clean and connect your data first? Put an existing model into a product? Automate a support process? Secure the AI tools your staff already use? Each answer points to a different profile, and a focused brief fills much faster.

Do not forget security and governance

AI brings new risks along with its benefits. Sensitive data can leak into public tools. Models can produce wrong or biased answers. Attackers are using AI too, to write convincing phishing emails and find weaknesses faster.

That is why AI hiring and cybersecurity hiring increasingly overlap. Companies need people who can set rules for safe AI use, review how AI systems handle data, and monitor them once they are live. Hiring for these skills early is far cheaper than fixing a problem later.
